“Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue”

While weddings are becoming more contemporary by the second it is nice to keep some traditional elements to your special day.  Following the ancient sang ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ is a great way to include a bit of convention- after all the passage denotes continuity, optimism, happiness and purity and best of all good luck.  Even the modern-day bride can find ways to appreciate tradition in a cool and contemporary way.  Below you will find interesting ways to incorporate personalized items into your wedding.

OLD

-Brides are saying good-bye to the old (and quite frankly washed up) handkerchief and welcoming a variety of heirlooms as their ‘something old.’  This is a great way to recognize your family.  This doesn’t mean you have to squeeze into your grandmother’s wedding dress- a great alternative is to replace your wedding dress buttons with hers.  If you would rather not wear your mother’s veil, why don’t you wrap it around your bouquet?  Talk to your mother and see what heirlooms you have access to, and then get creative.

NEW

-You’ve got the most freedom when selecting your ‘something new.’  Treat yourself. This is your chance to purchase something dear to you, an item you will want to pass on to your daughter on her wedding day. This item can be anything from a fancy perfume to a beautiful piece of jewelry.  Buy something you really want and have had your eye on for a while.

BORROWED

-This may be your most difficult item to select, as it may be tough to decide whom exactly you want to borrow from- remember to borrow from someone who is significant to you.  This could be your chance to borrow your sister’s diamond earrings (you know the ones she would never let you normally wear), or perhaps you will opt to wear your mother’s pearl necklace that has been passed down for generations.  Whatever you decide, think long and hard about this opportunity- and take advantage of it!

BLUE

-The most popular blue item (even to this day) is a lacy blue garter; while this option is acceptable don’t be scared to mix it up.  There are many ways to do this, depending if blue is in your color scheme. If it is- try cute blue heels, a small clutch, or beautiful sash. If blue isn’t one of your colors go for something a bit more subtle.  A piece of jewelry with a blue stone or blue lingerie are both great options.
